Viscount Trenchard – Vice-Chairman of the British-Japanese Parliamentary Group and one of the UK’s most experienced and knowledgeable experts on Japanese economics, culture and politics.

Hugh Trenchard began his career at Kleinwort Benson in 1973 and has more than 40 years’ experience in investment banking, including 35 years of involvement with Japan, 12 of them as a resident. He ran Kleinwort Benson’s Japanese operations for 11 years, and was subsequently Head of Japanese Investment Banking with Robert Fleming & Co. Limited, before working with Mizuho International plc. In addition, he also served as a Senior Adviser for Japan and Korea to Prudential Financial Inc..

Lord Trenchard is a leading member of the House of Lords and is a Vice-Chairman of the British-Japanese Parliamentary Group. He has contributed to the bilateral relations in his numerous capacities, including Director of Japan Securities Dealers Association, Vice-chair of the European Business Community in Japan, Joint Chairman of Japan Society, Managing Director of Mizuho International Limited, among others.

Hugh continues to promote the people-to-people exchange for parliamentarians and business people, as well as arranged many events whereby Japanese companies talk to his fellow Lords and MPs, and gave their thoughts to the Japanese government and companies. He also energetically played a leading role in hosting various cultural events in the UK to enable more British people to better understand the Japanese culture.

Lord Trenchard is also currently Chairman of the investment company Stratton Street PCC Limited, whose funds include the Renminbi Bond Fund managed by Stratton Street Capital LLP. In addition to this, he has been a consultant to Simon Robertson Associates LLP since March 2013.
